LightStream vs SoFi: Comparing Two Top Pool Loan Options

Two strong choices for good-credit borrowers — but the term lengths, fee structures, and rate mechanics differ more than the headlines suggest.

01

Two direct lenders, different DNA

LightStream and SoFi are both legitimate choices for financing a pool with strong credit. LightStream is a division of Truist Bank — a traditional banking subsidiary that has operated in the unsecured lending space for years. SoFi is a fintech company that has expanded from student loan refinancing into a full financial platform including personal loans, investing, and banking.

Both are direct lenders, meaning they underwrite and fund your loan themselves (unlike platforms such as Lyon Financial or HFS Financial that connect you with third-party lenders). This gives both more control over the borrower experience, but their products are structured differently in ways that matter for a pool project.

02

Rates: headline vs. reality

SoFi advertises personal loan rates starting at 6.99% APR. LightStream shows a 7.24% APR example for pool loans with AutoPay. On the surface, SoFi looks cheaper. But the comparison requires more context.

SoFi's lowest rate includes discounts (such as autopay) and may pair with an origination fee. SoFi offers borrowers a choice: take a lower rate with an origination fee (up to 7%), or take a higher rate with 0% fee. The 6.99% starting rate may be the discounted version with a fee attached. LightStream's rates assume AutoPay but never include an origination fee — what you see is closer to what you get.

The honest comparison is between the offers you actually receive. If SoFi quotes you 7.5% with no fee and LightStream quotes 7.24% with no fee, LightStream wins on rate. If SoFi quotes 6.99% but deducts a 3% fee from proceeds, the math changes. Always compare APR, net proceeds, monthly payment, and total cost together.

03

Term length: the biggest practical difference

LightStream offers terms from 2 to 20 years for pool loans. SoFi caps at 7 years. This is arguably the most important difference between the two for pool financing.

A $60,000 pool loan at 7.5% over 7 years costs roughly $920/month. The same loan over 15 years costs about $555/month — a $365/month difference that can determine whether a project is affordable. The tradeoff is interest: the 15-year loan costs significantly more in total interest. But for many households, the lower payment is necessary to maintain cash flow for pool ownership costs, emergency savings, and other obligations.

If your project fits comfortably within a 7-year payment at SoFi's rates, the term cap is not an issue. If you need 10, 15, or 20 years to make the payment work without straining your budget, LightStream is the stronger option simply because SoFi cannot offer that structure.

  • LightStream: 2–20 year terms for pool loans
  • SoFi: 2–7 year terms
  • For a $60K loan at 7.5%: ~$920/month over 7 years vs. ~$555/month over 15 years
  • Longer terms reduce payment but increase total interest significantly
04

Fees, rate-beat, and prequalification

LightStream charges no origination fee, no application fee, and no prepayment penalty. It also offers a Rate Beat Program: if you receive a lower rate from another lender on a comparable loan, LightStream will beat it by 0.10 percentage points (subject to conditions). This creates a competitive backstop.

SoFi offers soft-pull prequalification, allowing you to check potential rates without a hard credit inquiry. This is valuable for rate shopping — you can see a personalized estimate before committing. LightStream does not offer a soft-pull prequalification step; applying initiates the underwriting process.

SoFi's origination fee structure gives you a choice between rate and fee combinations. Some borrowers may prefer a lower rate even with a fee; others will choose the 0% fee option. LightStream removes the decision entirely by never charging a fee.

05

Funding and loan experience

Both lenders can fund quickly. LightStream advertises same-day funding for approved borrowers. SoFi also offers fast disbursement, with some loans funded within a day or two of approval. For pool projects where a builder deposit is due, either lender can typically meet the timeline.

SoFi's member ecosystem includes financial planning tools, career coaching, and a polished app. If you already use SoFi for banking or investing, keeping the loan there simplifies your financial dashboard. LightStream's experience is more transactional — apply, fund, repay — without the broader platform.

Neither factor should override rate and term economics, but they can serve as tiebreakers for borrowers who are otherwise indifferent.

06

Making the choice

Choose LightStream if you want guaranteed zero fees, the option of a 10–20 year term for a manageable payment, or the rate-beat backstop. LightStream is particularly strong for borrowers who have already identified a better rate elsewhere and want LightStream to beat it.

Choose SoFi if you want to check rates with a soft pull before committing, prefer SoFi's member platform, or your project fits comfortably within a 7-year repayment window. SoFi's starting rate can be very competitive for borrowers with excellent credit who choose the right fee structure.

For most pool projects over $40,000, the term-length difference is the deciding factor. Model both a 7-year and a 12–15 year payment to see which fits your household budget.
